The characterization of energy storage applications usually asks for standard macroscale techniques. Nanoscale methods, as introduced here, can provide more information, which are useful for porous materials, for nanoscale crystallites or surface patterns, and for the case of chemical inhomogeneities, as in material blends. The techniques can be classified as in situ and ex situ. The focus is often either on structural or on chemical information.
