Abstract

We perform Large-eddy simulations (LES) of an annular swirling turbulent jet with high values of the swirl parameter S = 0.6 and 0.7 corresponding to the final stage of the vortex breakdown, i.e. when two recirculating zones are separate and finally merge, respectively. The Reynolds number based on the bulk velocity and outer pipe diameter is 8900 while the outer to inner diameter ratio is 2. We observe strong helical coherent vortical structures accompanying this process and demonstrate that the precession is stronger for high swirl rates with a single recirculating bubble.
