Simulation of the flow in the human bronchial tree

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to simulate healthy and pathological human bronchial trees. Analytical formulas are derived for constructing an individual bifurcation of a bronchus and the entire bronchial tree with allowance for the deviation of the inner surfaces of the bronchi from a cylindrical shape. All surfaces of the bronchial tree are matched with the second-order smoothness (there are no acute angles or ribs). The geometric characteristics of the bronchial tree and the "starry" shape of the inner structure are defined parametrically.
