Abstract

The outcomes of reactions between bismuth triiodide, 1,3,5-trimethylpyridinium iodide (1,3,5-MePyI), copper(I) or silver(I) iodides depend on the nature of solvents used in preparation. From acetone/acetonitrile mixture, there crystallizes only binuclear (1,3,5-MePy)3[Bi2I9] (1), while addition of ethanol allows isolation of homometallic (1,3,5-MePy)11.8[Cu(CH3CN)4]0.2[Bi6I22][Bi5I19]2 (2) or heterometallic polymeric (1,3,5-MePy)2{[Bi2Cu2I10]} (3) and (1,3,5-MePy)2{[Bi2Ag2I10]} (4). For all complexes, optical band gaps were estimated via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (2.06, 1.88, 1.84 and 1.92 eV, respectively). 1–4 reveal relatively high thermal stability.
