DNS of round turbulent jets with variable density

Abstract

We study round turbulent jets with variable density using Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and Spectral element method (SEM) for spatial discretization. A fully developed turbulent air pipe flow at a Reynolds number Re = 5300 enters the volume filled with ambient gas (air, carbon dioxide or helium). The validation of DNS is performed using the data from the literature. We inspect the instantaneous velocity and concentration fields for all three cases with the emphasis on the typical vortical structures dominating the flow.
