Corneometry in assessing the effectiveness of moisturizing effect of topical preparations

Abstract

Corneometry was applied to assess skin moisture in 88 people aged 18—60 years in 5 and 30 min after contact with water and creams containing 0.1% methylprednisolone aceponate (MPA) in combination with ceramides and 2% urea. There was no correlation between moisture of the upper skin layers and age (r=0.27). Mean skin moisture was 9.4±8.0 units before exposure that corresponded to severe dry skin. In 30 min after contact with water, skin moisture depended on the initial state (r=0.72). Moisture was lower than initial level in 47.7% of patients, mean value was 9.1±3.4 U. The same value was 13.9±7.2 and 16.7 ±7.9 U in 30 min after contact with a cream containing 0.1% MPA in combination with ceramides or 2% urea, respectively. Skin moisture below the initial level was noted in 20.4 and 12.5% of patients, respectively. There was no correlation of skin moisture in 30 min after cream applying and initial moisture content in stratum corneum of the skin (r=0.25 and r=0.51, respectively).
