    Abstract

The practice of exchange of jasak for gifts, which was arisen in Russian-Chukotian relations, shows that Chukchi organized and kept up peaceful contacts with Russian people in accordance with their (Chukotian) ideas of contractual relations, in which the exchange of gifts played dominant role. When Russian interpreted the act of giving of jasak by Chukotian people in exchange for gifts as demonstration of citizenship, Chukchi understood this procedure as demonstration of their own readiness to peaceful interaction with Russian people as equal «partners».
