Abstract
The article is devoted to the basic approaches to punctuation of the Old English and Middle English manuscripts, rhetorical and grammatical in particular. Special attention is paid to M. B. Parkes' approach. A brief overview of his point of view on the medieval attitude to reading is given. Two Old English and Middle English punctuation systems ( by positurae and by distinctiones ) are described alongside with the basic punctuation principles and different alternations of the signs' forms
