Abstract

The article is a study on the information about the legendary origin of a nomadic leader, the founder of a powerful military state; this information is in chronicle and folklore sources of some ancient and medieval Mongol peoples. A comparative analysis is done of such subjects known in the legends of different Mongol ethnic units: Syanbytes, Kidans, Mongols and also ancient Koreans. The author traces the evolution of the ideas about the heavenly origin of the ruler or his ancestors during the periods of antiquity and the Middle Ages.
