Abstract
The article deals with a very important issue regarding the nature of disappearance of the Dzungarian nation - the traditional version depicts this process as the implementation of the cunning plan of Emperor Qianlong prepared before 1755. The analysis of the documents of 1755-1758 shows that the Qianlong’s view of the matter changed drastically in the period of 1755-1757 due to the constant rebellions in Dzungaria and it led to the almost total disappearance of Dzungar Oirats, part of them were annihilated during the punitive expeditions of Qing troops while others underwent forced assimilation among different nations that inhabited the Qing empire.
