Abstract

The author reviews a dramatic period of Soviet science through the story of Novosibirsk Academgorodok. It is seen as an interaction between the scientific community and its governing structure including relations of power within science. The town of academic science created in Siberia fully embodied the positive potential of the existing social system of that period. This mostly refers to the maximum concentration of all available resources on top priority development. Along with that, the history of Academgorodok vividly displayed many striking contradictions of ‘state socialism’ such as power dominance, hierarchy and bureaucracy
