Abstract

It is posed the problem of studying the phenomenon of «mentality» in the academic discipline «Philosophy». The author shows that social transformations have led to the formation of new global problems that require the interaction of people with different worldviews. Various approaches are used to demonstrate the essence of the phenomenon of mentality and the importance of its study to understand the specifics of the worldview of a particular cultural and historical type. In particular, the author relies on the concept of cultural systems of P. Sorokin, the concept of archetypes of the collective unconscious C. Jung and the theory of mentality of L. Levy-Bruhl. The involvement of these scientific theories is intended to show the sources of differences in the fundamental level of mentality from the very beginning of its formation. These differences led to the formation of many different types of mentality, which can be conventionally divided into western mentality and eastern one. The eastern mentality is characterized by the prevalence of the ideological, moral component over the rational one, while the western one is distinguished by a rational and practical approach. The essence of these mentalities is reflected in Western and Eastern philosophy. Thus, the author of the article leads to the determination of the significance of studying the mentality in the framework of the academic discipline «Philosophy» in high school. Further, there is an indication of the specific role of philosophy for the formation of the student’s world view. It also explains how the study of mentality within the discipline of «Philosophy» contributes to the formation of a student’s worldview. In the end, a conclusion is made about the relevance of studying the phenomenon of mentality in the framework of the university teaching the course «Philosophy». Further, further tasks are set for the development of this subject, in particular, the need to develop a specific content of the subject of mentality, which can be included in the teaching of the discipline «Philosophy»
