Abstract

Ultrasonic high-frequency skin scanning allows for dynamic monitoring of patients skin condition in the treatment of dermatosis. Changes in ultrasound characteristics of epidermis and dermis have been studied in 22 children with atopic dermatitis after 4 weeks of combined topical therapy (cream containing 0.1% methylprednisolone aceponate in combination with ceramides; ointment containing 0.03% tacrolimus and emollient in the form of an emulsion). In patients with mild atopic dermatitis, an increase in epidermis thickness compared to apparently healthy surrounding skin was observed prior to treatment in foci. In patients with moderate disease severity, an increase in epidermis thickness and dermis thickness was observed before treatment in foci, as well as a decrease in dermis echogenicity and a lesser degree of epidermis. In severe cases, an increase in epidermis and dermis thickness and a decrease in their echogenicity were observed before the treatment in foci. After 4 weeks of treatment in the foci of atopic dermatitis, changes in the ultrasound picture of the skin in the form of reduced epidermis echogenicity and increased dermis echogenicity, the severity of which depended on the severity of atopic dermatitis. In addition, after treatment in the foci of lesions a decrease in the severity of subepidermal low echogenic band (SLEB) in patients with severe atopic dermatitis and its regression in patients with mild to moderate degree of disease severity were observed. The application of ultrasound scanning of the skin is of interest to practicing doctors as a method of dynamic assessment of the condition of the skin and the effectiveness of therapy for children with atopic dermatitis.
