Abstract

We analysed treatments for keloid scars based on 3835 studies published during the period from 1854 to 2015, which were found by searching the abstracts in the National Library of Medicine PubMed database, using «keloid» keyword. Destructive therapies are most often used despite the large number of relapse (40—100%). According to international authors, laser surgery (17.51%) and surgical excision (8.93%) are the leaders among the treatments for keloids. The use of combination therapies (surgery in combination with hormone therapy, radiotherapy, and other types of topical treatment, 8.34%) reduced the relapse rate to 15—40%. Cryotherapy (7.46%) provides stable cosmetic effect along with low relapse rate (3—12%), but it is not a priority treatment for keloids. According to Russian authors, cryotherapy (18.09%) and microwave cryosurgery (30.85%) are the optimal treatments for keloids, where the relapse rates do not exceed 3%, which makes them promising for medical practitioners in the context of relapse rate minimization.
